In last week’s article, we discussed the role of M365 within an organization, how it is managed, and how it connects with other content management solutions. Given its rapid growth and adoption, especially as the Cloud versions of Office 365 and SharePoint mature, we may have made a few points about branding terms. With similar names, “Microsoft 365” and “Office 365” are sometimes used interchangeably by users. They are actually different. What’s the difference? Let’s face it: The chaos may have started in 2017 with Microsoft’s announcement of Microsoft 365. This new offering bundles a number of their products into one license. One of the products included in the suite is Office 365… and you can see where the terminology is confusing. Let’s clear things up with the following graphic: Office 365: Includes a suite of cloud-based software and services around business productivity. Services such as Skype for Business, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Yammer, Planner Monthly, per-user subscriptions (multiple plans) Microsoft 365 Office 365 A suite of services including Office 365, Windows 10 Enterprise, Enterprise . Mobility + Security (EMS) and Machine Learning Choose from multiple plans to suit your needs What is Office 365? Office 365 is a cloud services platform that offers Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive, along with other productivity services such as Microsoft Teams through online or on-premise subscription plans. What is Microsoft 365? Microsoft 365 includes the Office 365 suite of software, Windows 10 Pro, and Enterprise Mobility + Security for a complete, connected experience. Microsoft 365 Enterprise Edition is designed for organizations that need a single platform to share risks and collaborate, and provides data security built on top of Windows 10 Pro and Office 365. On April 21, 2020, the consumer and small business plan Office 365 was renamed Microsoft 365, emphasizing productivity capabilities and services outside of Microsoft’s core software suite. The Office 365 brand is used for plans targeted at the enterprise market and as a distribution version of Microsoft Office software distributed as part of the service. I hope this helps you understand Microsoft’s nomenclature.

Microsoft Office is a suite of software that includes several programs to support your productivity, workflow, and learning. Because Office is available as both a perpetual license (Office 2021) and a cloud-based solution (Microsoft 365), it’s important to make the right decision about which one is right for you. Read more about the two software licenses, their differences, and features below in this blog post. Finally, you can also use questions to estimate the compliance level of each license.
Microsoft 365 Vs Office 2021: Which Suits You Better
Office 2021 is a perpetual license with multiple editions. The main edition is Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021. This package gives you access to Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint. If you also require Outlook to perform your daily tasks, then the Home and Business editions are the licenses for you.
With Office Standard 2021, you can use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and additional application versions. Microsoft Office provides Access for all applications. Microsoft Office Professional Plus is the most comprehensive version and offers everything Office Professional does with the addition of Skype. The table below shows which program is available in which version.
Microsoft Office 365 (formerly known as Office 365) is a subscription-based license that includes popular Office desktop applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Like perpetual licenses, subscription software comes in different versions.
Sharepoint Vs Office 365: Is Sharepoint Part Of Office 365?
Basic package – Microsoft Office 365 Personal, lets you work in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook. This version also offers 1TB of storage on OneDrive. Microsoft Personal, as the name suggests, is for one person. If you’re looking for this subscription but want to use it with others, Office 365 Family is the solution for you. You can subscribe up to 5 other users with this version. As the number of users increases, this subscription can increase OneDrive capacity up to 6TB.
If you need additional apps like Teams, Publishing, and Access, Office 365 Business Edition is best for you. This version can also keep data safe with OneDrive, SharePoint and Exchange. Office 365 Business Standard is suitable for business. The maximum number of users is 300.
A major difference between the two software programs is the payment model. With Microsoft Office 2021, you pay once when you buy and you can technically use the license for an unlimited period of time. You pay a monthly or annual fee to continue using your license with Microsoft 365. While the monthly fee may not seem like much, Office 2021 will be cheaper in the long run.
The Little (un)known Secrets Of Using Microsoft 365 Apps (previously Office 365 Proplus And Office 2019) On A Virtual Desktop Environment
Another difference worth mentioning is that Microsoft 365 is always updated. This license also provides technical support for the duration of the subscription. Technical support for Office 2021 lasts for 60 days.

Renaming Office 365 To Microsoft 365
In this article, we’ll take a detailed look at the differences between Office 365 and Office 2016, so you can make an educated decision about which software package is right for your needs.
Before we dive into the differences between Office 365 and Office 2016, here’s a broad overview. The table below provides a quick and easy comparison of the features offered by Microsoft’s two software packages.
Both offer similar productivity features (except for OneDrive), but there are some key differences, the most important of which is the pricing structure. Let’s look at this first.
Compare Office 365 Plans, Pricing, And Features
Unlike Microsoft Office 2016, most versions of Office use a subscription pricing model for Office 365. Users can pay monthly or annually, with the annual option being cheaper in the long run.
Office 365 subscriptions can be shared between users – whether they’re family members, friends or colleagues. Here are the prices in Australia (as of March 2018):
Remember, if you stop paying for your subscription, you can still access Office applications and files stored on OneDrive.
Office 2021 Vs. Microsoft 365: How To Choose
Office 2016 is available for $199 per user on a PC or Mac.
Both Office 365 and Office 2016 offer all the Microsoft apps we know and love. With either option, you can access the following content:
In addition to the above, Office 365 offers OneDrive, a cloud storage app that makes backing up, sharing, and collaborating on files incredibly simple. We’ll revisit OneDrive in the Storage section of this article.
The Differences Between Office 365 Business Premium And Office 365 Business Essentials Packages
Because Office 365 uses a subscription pricing model, your Office suite never gets old. Subscribers can download and install the latest updates and latest features.
Access to 1TB of cloud storage with OneDrive is a huge selling point of Office 365. Office 2016 has no storage space.
Cloud storage makes it quick and easy to share and access your files, collaborate, and back up your important files. What’s more, 1TB of storage on its own with comparable cloud storage services can cost you over $20 per month!
